Ethel C. Kimball, age 97, formerly of Garden Gate Estates, 66 Preston St., Hillsboro, died Wednesday, July 06, 2016. She had been a resident at Hillsboro House in Hillsboro after a period of declining health. She was Known as Susie or Kim.
She was born in Deering, NH on August 26, 1918, the youngest daughter of Bates (Charles) and Cecelia Kimball. Susie attended local schools and graduated from the Margaret Pillsbury School of Nursing in Concord, NH in 1940. She pursued her nursing career working in New York City, and San Francisco, California. Susie was very proud of her service as a nurse for the US Army during World War II. She spent over 2 years in the South Pacific caring for our troops as a surgical nurse in Army Field Hospitals and then, 2 years at Camp Polk, LA.
Although Susie left Hillsboro for many years, her hometown was always Hillsboro. She never married, but was a second mother to her many nieces and nephews. Her late nephew, CJ “Sandy” Crimmins, said he grew up thinking everyone had a second Mother. The Crimmins family built a vacation home on Pierce Lake in 1953, and with Susie, spent holidays and summers there until 1967 when the Crimmins family moved to Hillsboro permanently. Susie retired from nursing in 1987 moving from NYC to spend her remaining years in Hillsboro surrounded by family and friends.
She remained a big part of the lives her many nieces and nephews, their children and their grandchildren. She had a love of travel and an adventurous spirit always staying in touch with many of nurses and servicemen she served with in WW II. She shared her home with a succession of much loved cats who were her faithful companions and housemates. She was a longtime member of the Ladies Aid Society and working diligently to support and preserve the Union Chapel in the Lower Village.
Miss Kimball is survived by her sister, Martha Bishop of St. Helena Island, SC, sister-in-law Jean Kimball of Hillsboro, her nieces, Gail Crimmins and Nancy Wood of Hillsboro, niece Beth Patterson of St. Helena Island, SC, nephews David Kimball of Bradford, NH and John Bishop of Bowdinham, ME. She has many grandnieces, grandnephews & their children who will greatly miss “Grand” Susie.
Burial will be in Maple Ave Cemetery in Hillsboro NH, at the convenience of the family.
Holt-Woodbury Funeral Home, 32 School St., Hillsboro, NH is assisting the family.
